Future of Agriculture & Farming In The United States

Agriculture is a vibrant sector and plays a major role in the economy of the United States. Fortunately, as our culture has grown more technologically advanced, so have our agricultural technologies. So what changes can we expect to see in the agriculture sector in the future? Although we can only speculate, many people believe that farming production will incorporate the latest technology. In fact, a large number of commercial farms are already employing the latest technologies in their production, packaging, storing and distributing processes.

The global demand for food is expected to increase rapidly in the next few years. By 2050, there will be over three billion additional mouths to feed worldwide. Agricultural businesses are taking this information very seriously, because large corporations are expected to enter the agriculture sector. In order to be more competitive, local farming businesses needs to adjust their business practices.

Farming will become more technical

Currently, more farmers are using modern facilities and methods to run and manage their farms than ever before. For example, the use of computers has increased; farmers are now using computers to hire people. Additionally, the use of social media for marketing and human resource management has become popular among farmers.

Employment in the farming industry

Although farming is turning into a corporate industry, according to a USDA data, almost 96% of farms in the USA are family run. Although family businesses are great for local economy, they often hire family or friends that are inexperienced and under qualified. This can be harmful to business.

Diversity in the workforce is going to be a key element in the future ofagriculture. The variety of skills required in the agricultural sector will include a wide range of disciplines, such as agriculture, environmental science, computer technology and so on. Currently, universities around the world are seeing increased interest in Agricultural Science degree programs.

indian cornWith the progress of technology and the increase global agricultural demands, there are some new kinds of threats that have been associated with agriculture and farming; farmers have been altering natural plant and animal chemistry by introducing inorganic food, GMO, pesticides and fertilizers into their farming practices.This is which a source of significant global debate, as it significantly reduces biodiversity in plants and animals and poses potential health risks when consumed. Fortunately, increasing governmental regulations and breakthroughs in sustainable agricultural science are beginning to combat the ill effects of these practices.

As you can see, there are both positive and negative components to the projected future of agriculture. Fortunately, statistics indicate that we will have a surplus of food in the future, despite the projected growth in population. The most important question at hand is the extent to which this food will be sustainably sourced and healthy to eat.
